Joaquin Phoenix's on Letterman, Paltrow's Solipsisitc Goop

February 12, 2009, by Rex 1 comment

If you haven’t been following Mr. Phoenix’s career moves like I have, well he is putting on a ruse of Andy Kaufman proportions by reportedly quitting acting (last fall Defamer article) and starting a music hip hop career full time. His brother in law Casey Affleck is filming a documentary on the whole thing but according to Gig Wise the whole thing is an elaborate hoax.

I’ve been following Mr. Phoenix’s Andy Kaufman esque hoax closely to decide whether its a hit or miss. I’m not a huge fan of this type of humor, but its refreshing in America’s culture. The LA Times has a write up about his last film “Two Lovers” mixed press. of the off screen theatrics of two of its main stars: Gwyneth Paltrow’s solipsistic self help website Goop and Phoenix’s aforementioned new music career.

And then last night Phoenix went on Letterman.  Its a great straight performance by Joaquin, but an even better one by David Letterman. In my opinion, its Letterman that really did a great job with this.  And there is a big reason why JQ didn’t go on Jay Leno–Leno just wouldn’t be able to play this scene as well as Letterman.  Leno may have overtaken Letterman in ratings, but Leno’s humor is more about dirty and silly jokes, where Letterman relies more on dry humor than stale comedic devices of Leno’s giggle standards.

Woooh! New Social Media Numbers!

February 12, 2009, by Rex No comments yet

With Facebook officially turning five years old recently, combined with the site surging past MySpace in Monthly Unique Visitors, it seems like a good time to take a little deeper look at the social networking giants.

It’s hard to believe that last year around this time we discussing the effects of bad PR for Facebook and if the site had ‘jumped the shark,’ but those arguments now seem to more appropriately apply to other properties.

A year ago, we ranked the top 25 social networking sites by monthly visits, and I was curious to see how the positions would change if we re-ranked those same sites with the most recent figures.
Social Networks: Facebook Takes Over Top Spot, Twitter Climbs

11% of Online Americans Now Using Twitter!

February 11, 2009, by Rex No comments yet

Online microblogging services like Twitter, a popular social media tool for many media companies and television networks, are used by 11% of online Americans, according to a research report conducted by Pew Internet & American Life Project in December and released today. That’s up from 9% of online Americans using the service in November.

Back in May, Pew reported online microblogging usage at about 6% of online Americans.

Twitter users skew young, with one in five online Americans in the 18-to-24 demo using Twitter. But Pew also said the median age of a Twitter user is 31, compared to 27 for MySpace, 26 for Facebook and 40 for LinkedIn.

Media and online video companies such as Hulu and Veoh regularly use Twitter to track consumer feedback and to interact with users.

Experimenting with Omnigraffe Pro

February 9, 2009, by Rex No comments yet

I decided to give mind mapping a try after reading February’s issue of MacWorld that reviewed all the mind mapping software for a mac.

High marks were given for Omnigraffe Pro for its ease of use yet robust engine, so I went for that one.

I then found a mind mapping repository site called Graffletopia and began experimenting with the member contributed templates.

I found a really great template and made the mind map or process below. Its a basic model of a business to client relationship, from starting a project to seeing results. Feel free to use it in any way you like. Some thoughts are to put a company logo or website icon in the middle. Since using Omnigraffe Pro for this short while I’m surprised how easy and flexible mind maps are to make.
